Barclays Cheque Book Request Problem ?

I have recently opened a Barclays Bank Account online and I understand that Cheque Books are no longer issued automatically when the account is opened, but have to be requested.

I find a cheque book a handy thing if I need to send money by post so I called up Telephone banking and was told that they would need to send a fax to the operations department to request one, I thought I could just call and they would just click and request one.

Is this normal or should I have just gone into a branch and ordered one ?.

Also when Lloyds send me a cheque book I got a text to say it had been sent, do Barclays do this or do I just need to wait and see if it turns up ?.

What difference does it make to your whether they click or send a fax?

I guess what I mean't was that I thought I could have ordered it myself using online banking, or the advisor would not have had to take all my details and phone number to send a fax to another department, I though he could have just done it by clicking a button on his computer.

Coincidentally I just ordered a new cheque book from my Barclays branch today :) was even offered a rush delivery, but declined as I was in no rush. They can do it no problem in branch :)

I had the same problem when i opened my account. I called up to get a cheque book as their online application doesnt have the option to request one, and was told i had to go to a branch to order one! Took a longer lunch one day to go to my nearest branch waited 45 minutes in a queue that didnt move, got fed up and left. I wrote a complaint letter, got an apology, a cheque book, paying in book and £25 for my trouble.
Debt free and staying that way!

No there was no option online to order one, they say that "Cheque books are not issued as standard any longer as a part of our efforts to reduce the impact on the environment. However, they can be requested if necessary."

It's Barclays, they make their own rules up as they go along. On the other aspect very few people bother with cheques nowadays. After all they're 19th century technology!
