Who approves renewals if I pay for my son's insurance?

I am paying for my adult son's health insurance. The insurer says that they called him, and that he OK'd renewal for the new year (which includes a big price hike).

If this is the case, since I am actually the one paying, do I have to accept the renewal? The insurer says that it is up to him to approve the renewal, as he is the insured, but surely they need the permission of the person who is actually paying?

Your son agrees renewal with the insurer. The contract is between him and then.
  • Just to be clear - the payment comes directly from me to the insurer by direct debit.

Understood. Contract is still between him and them.
  • The contract is between the insured and the insurer. The insured at the time of establishing the DD or CPA warrants that they have the account holders permission for payment to be taken and that future renewals will occur automatically unless otherwise instructed and payment details will be retained for these purposes

If you cancelled the payment they would chase him not you as the contract is between them and him. You are only supplying the finance for the policy.

I'd have thought that it is possible for me to have a policy that covers others, in which case the OP has a valid grumble.

    All depends on the policy
