Cheap ferries to Ireland???

Does anyone know a cheap way of traveling (with a car) for a family of four to Ireland? We want to visit family for a few days - its cheaper to sail to France! Were pretty open to sailing to and from any port and at any time. Anyone know any companies who are 'reasonably' priced....why is it so expensive to get there!? Thank you.

  • Hi Squirehorse, you're not wrong there, seems like the prices for ferries get higher and higher every year. It's definately a good deal going to France, load the car up with up to 9 people and unlimited baggage for something as reasonable as £30 return. Perhaps it's because there are so many competitors to the same ports these days, like P&O,My Ferry Link, DFDS.. Anyway. Last trip to Ireland we made was in November, we travelled on the route Holyhead to Dublin and managed to find it cheaper on www.ferrysavers.co.uk , I usually check the operators page directly as well as price comparison companies as they show you who's cheapest and the best hours to travel.. Another one I have used in the past is www.aferry.co.uk , I like the price comparison engine they have. But as I said, best check everywhere before you book with the first quote you get, it may take some more time but every little saving helps..

    Hi,

If you've got any tesco vouchers you can get 4 times face value for Stenna vouchers at the moment.

  • It's much, much cheaper to fly and then hire a car over there. If you insist on using a ferry, take a look at the P&O service from Liverpool. It's mostly used by lorry drivers, but I've used it a couple of times - and you get a free 'heart attack on a plate' type breakfast too!!
One of the reasons that France is cheaper is that it's a lot nearer!!

I hate the morning crossings, but they tend to be cheaper, also it's cheaper to go from either Pembroke Dock or Fishguard, or was when I looked into it, but the price of the ferry was combined with the price of the cottage we stayed in so didn't have to book it seperarely last time we went over in September

    Choose when to travel carefully!
Pick the anti social hours ie middle of night or ferry that arrives say midnight
With Stena it's travel on Tues & Weds. Mon & Thurs are dearer, Fri, Sat & Sunday the very dearest
Oh, and don't travel at trad holiday times- price shoots up for Easter ..in fact school holidays!

Yes Tesco vouchers for Stena are a good deal at the moment but you don't have too long to get organised:
Tokens must be ordered by February 28th & bookings made by March 14th 2013. Valid for ferry crossings until 31st Dec 2013
You can now pay for the crossing in full on these routes to ROI: Fishguard-Rosslare, Holyhead- Port Dublin/ Dun Laoghaire.
There is a cap on amount of tokens for Stena's other crossings.
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
