Radiator widths?

Can anyone tell me whether the widths quoted by rad makers is usually the actual width of the rad or the width between the feed and return pipes?

I want to replace a bathroom rad with a heated towel rail and the actual measurement between pipe centres is 870mm. I am trying to decide which width of rail would suit best.

Nominal actual width, because you cannot guarantee the length of the valves
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

Its inevitable that some adjustment is required when replacing an existing with a new.

FYI you can get long radiator tails from screwfix and toolstation. These allow you to fit a small radiator.

Then you would need a 900mm wide towel rail (which they don't make to my knowledge) so it's pipe alteration time

CH has posted the link below, so i have learnt something today as i didn't know that width towel rail was available

With most towel rails these days the valves are installed in the bottom of the rail and are vertical (unlike a rad where they enter the side and therefore, horizontal). Longer valve tails won't help, methinks, in such a scenario.

    Just sayin'

A 900 wide towel rail would do.

It's the wall to centre dimension that might prove awkward.

Unless you have some play in the pipework.

Thanks for the link, just right but currently unavailable. Maybe we'll live with the old Rad.
