I can thoroughly recommend Kippford Holiday Park near Dumfries.

It is in a rural location, close to superb beaches and is well laid out. There is lots to do in the area. Plus not too far from the Border.

i couldnt agree more...we got the last pitch one nite last summer and it was best camp site we have both stayed at...really good..the toilets were immaculate and the staff couldnt do enough for us...we would definately return

In hindsight I think we are now going to leave the Scotland trip until the summer as then we can go for 2 weeks and really see the place, thank you for your suggestions so far, I will keep a note of them and search out those recommendations when we go

A very wise decision. As nice as the southwest is (I grew up in Ayrshire), you really have to travel right up the west coast to see the spectacular parts. I would suggest starting off staying in Fort William. To get there you will pass by Loch Lomond, Glencoe and get your first taste of the proper Highlands. After that, travel up to Arisaig, there are numerous campsites there, with modern facilities, and right on the sea so hardly any midges. From there you can plan daytrips to visit some of the inner isles such as Eigg, Rum, Mull, or Iona.

To visit Skye, you really have to stay there, but again there are loads of campsites, although the facilities tend to be a bit more basic on Skye as it's mostly hillwalkers who camp there. If you want to go all the way out, it is quite possible to get the ferry across to Stornoway in the Hebrides, but be warned, the place shuts down completely on a Sunday to the extent that the swings are locked up in the parks to stop people playing on them.

If you continue up the west coast, and you have 2 weeks, so why not, the next place to stay is Ullapool, which again has several campsites. From there the country gets really remote, but driving along the coast road up to the north coast is a spectacular experience.

There isn't really much on the north coast aside from John'O'Groats, although you might want to consider a trip to Orkney, which is a fantastic place to visit.

Most people leave John'O'Groats and head straight back south via Inverness, which is probably the best as the east coast really isn't that exciting.

If you're still looking for a site in Cumbria - add Limefitt Park to your list

We've had some great times there & the location is to die for

I would second Kippford and Brighouse Bay - both great sites. If you are after a smaller less commercialised site Brighouse Bay have a smaller sister site further along the road called seaward. It sits high and has lovely views over the sea. Also there is a fantastic very non commercialised local authority site in Kirkcudbright. It has amazing views over the town, hills and sea. Also Castle Douglas site is right on Carlingwork Loch and again is a lovely well run local authority site.

Happy looking and happy holidays :D

Thanks for the link to my site :j

I should point out that it's not the official site of Limefitt Park just one I put together. (I have a log cabin there)

Limefitt is a LOVELY place and I would heartily recommend it.

we have now changed our minds yet again, we are off to Shropshire, camping near the devils chair, we are only going for 3 nights as my mum (who is 73) has decided that she wants to come and doesn't want to travel too far from hers so Shropshire it is

thanks for all your advice and I think that doing the north of Scotland is definatly for us maybe this summer

As far as I know, Scotland's weather is much better in May and June than July and August. We figure it on 4 hours from Reading to Cumbria, and it's about another 90 mins from there to Glasgow. (from memory) So, in the Dumfice & Galloway area should be under 6 hours away I'd have thought (+ stops)
so we are now planning to go to Cumbria as it's not too far...
I can't recommend anywhere near beaches up there, as we're always up there for the mountains, but it's a lovely part of the world, and we're thinking of heading up there for a couple days at the end of the half term.

It is 2 miles from Pitlochry and 24 miles north of Perth if you wished to go there for the day.Really cool place and great for kids. You can hear the road a BIT at night but not as much as you would think, and after you have had one or two vinos, I doubt you will hear much.

Warning-it is REALLY popular so best to book if you plan to arrive over a weekend.

We camped in Glen Nevis two years ago. Absolutely fantastic scenery. Slightly bigger than we normally go to, but it was ideal as our base for the week.
