That was certainly the case when I was made redundant some years ago. You had to work there for 2 years before qualifying for redundancy pay. A quick google finds this

What does it say in his contract of employment? Sorry to hear your family have been caught up in this stores problems.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

You only qualify for statutory redundancy if you have been there for 2 years. https://www.gov.uk/calculate-your-redundancy-pay

I can't see many employers giving more than the legal minimum.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Yes, they can do this! All perfectly legal your right to redundancy pay doesn't kick in before two years service.

Sadly, yes, and as the (presumed) store is now "in administration" they will stick to the letter of the law, no goodwill gestures.
I assume your DH qualifies for contribution-based JSA, and hope that this tides you over whilst looking for other work.
You have my sympathies, and must add that The Guardian have praised the pleasant cheery attitude & helpfulness of HMV sales staff, and Radio 5 similarly praised Jessops, in such difficult circumstances.
  • Thanks everyone bit of a bummer then!!its not hmv its h*nda. Don't want to write it in case people are looking!
He won't find out if he is one of the chosen ones till April so kind of hanging around trying to decide wether to go for a few jobs that are closer to home,he spends £250 a month on petrol to get there and back,

Yep, as stated, they can do this.

This is generally why companies in financial difficulty operate on the last in, first out principle.
