My son is in his first year at university and will finish in june.I have a few questions if anyone can help me.
1,does he have to apply for the second year and if so when?.
2,when should he apply for student funding?.
3,when should he start looking for places to rent?
i know some people will say he should be able to do it himself,but he is 250 miles away and living in halls.I have told him to ask down there but he his a shy person.Any advice would be welcome,thanks.

Junior is in his first year as well and as I understand it, they will get an email from Student Finance telling them when they can apply for their next year's finance. If you go onto the student finance website they should have info to confirm this.
I don't think he has to apply for the 2nd year but I think he will have to register again but again his university website should confirm this.
As for acccomodation, I think he needs to start looking now! I know that Junior was getting highly stressed about it as he had to find somewhere on his own (for various reasons) - turns out he's found a bargain of a house with a girl off his course!
Will he be sharing with fellow students or is he also going to have find somewhere on his own?2014 Target;

I'm not sure whether this is what was meant in (1), buit in terms of being registered on the Uni course, I think successful completion of one year gives automatic entitlement to the next.0

I know its hard but I'm learning that its in everyone's interests if I back off....yes I keep an discrete eye on things but I've learnt that he doesn't thank you for it!
If the worse does come to the worse, and he does end up having to find a room by himself I can recommend https://www.spareroom.co.uk. If he puts in the post code of his uni then he may find rooms in student houses that need an extra person.2014 Target;

He should probably start looking for places to Rent now. Many universities will have put out their housing lists by now.0

SFE will email it might be about March he needs to get it in by - but you can check of the SFE website... he'll be able to log in and tick boxes that say of nothing has changed it'll take about 10 minutes...
there all be posters all over the uni about housing and letting agents that will work with students.... and others will be 'helping' with this.... but yes he should be looking in the next few months.
and if he doesn't fail they will assume he is going into the second year, which will be confirmed by a registration process... we have to go and stand in mile long queues to get our library cards scanned with ID and they then release our student finance... (he'll get a letter some uni's do it alphabetically, others by course at different time or in different building come September...)
he won't need to do anything that isn't spelled out in the letter though...

I agree with mountainofdebt that you really need to maintain a distance, be available if there is a serious problem but for his own sake you should let him make his own decisions, including a few mistakes. University is about learning to deal with life as well as academic education, if he knows how to sort out accommodation now then that's a good lesson learned for when he enters the real world.0
