SLC - Want me to pay back my grant? Advice please :(

  • Yeah totally. I received a £10 EMA when I was at sixth form, which kinda came into the equation when I applied for a grant. I was aware that I may not have received it, but it appeared that I did indeed originally qualify.

Due to an increased income in the tax years following (from last year onwards) I was aware that I would no longer receive a grant, and I was fully prepared to take out a loan of around £2,000. On top of the £3,000 a year it is costing me, that's a hell of a lot of debt I will come out of university with. It's also near the maximum ammount I could take - if I just got by this year on less than £1800 no way would it be possible to live away from home without working all sorts of hours :p.

I'm by no means not enjoying life at university, quite the opposite! Somtimes it would be nice to go out more, but that's what my college/sixth-form years were used for. :D

Anyway, I'll be ringing my LEA later asking for some kind of reason why and how they got the calculation incorrect in the first place.

    Cheers guys :)

edit: I'm not sure what you guys count as 'low-income' but in the years previous to this one, my parents joint income was around £30,000 to £33,000. I'm not fully sure.

I wasn't really talking about socialising; I meant things like activities and travel. These cost money but employers are keen on added value from a degree.
