Changing Home Insurance - Same Insurer Query

Hello,

I am currently insured with Legal & General and recently received my renewal letter and quote.

I used a variety of comparison sites and found that I could get better cover for cheaper through Swinton.

However before purchasing the insurance I noticed that the insurance is underwritten by Legal & General.

I can't see any specific terms or literature stating I am unable to take out the insurance, however, does anyone know whether there would be an issue with me taking out this policy with Swinton?

There is nothing to stop you taking the Swinton policy.

Legal & General are a large underwriter who will provide insurance through many channels - brokers, intermediaries or directly.

You will be a new customer through Swinton so there would not be any issues.

May I ask what Swinton are offering on the cover you that is better than the L&G policy?

If you have been insured with L&G for a while you might find that the premium has gone up (as with all insurers) but you could ring them to see if they can upgrade the cover to match the Swinton offer and may give you a discount to retain your business.

Check the excess fees on each quote.
  • The policy via a broker may be totally different than that which is available via their direct proposition (even what is available via an aggregator can be different from whats available via their website) and many large brokers have bespoke wordings.

I'd suggest you search for feedback on Swinton before signing up to them

If there is any chance of you needing to cancel the Swinton don't do it as they have probably allowed a discount out of their commission which they claw back out of any refund.

Thanks for all of your input and apologies for the delay in replying.

    I have decided against Swinton.

I ran a quote today on the Legal & General website which is about forty pounds cheaper a year than the renewal offer sent through to me.

Can I sign up directly to Legal & General again, or is this prohibited as I already have a policy through them?
  • Read the terms of the website, in most cases there is nothing to stop you do it but at the same time, if you phone them they often will price match their new customer price to save the pain of stopping the renewal and you buying again via the website

    There will be no problem.

Make sure your current policy isn't on autorenew. If it is then instruct them to lapse it on its expiry and get them to confirm this back to you in writing.

Check out l&g via the cashback sites (eg £50 cb for combined contents and buildings from topcashback) and see if that's any cheaper than the quote you now have.

Unless it says something specifically in the terms and conditions that the online price is for new customers only then you will have no problem.

You could ring them to accept the online quote to clarify if you are still in doubt.
