Need help re gmail and my samsung

Can anyone help? My son set up googlemail on my Samsung galaxy europa a year ago (gift for my 60th).Never actually used googlemail itself apart from of course to use apps etc.Well today in my wisdom I decided to sign up with several pubs and restaurants to get free offers.
I thought I might aswell use my google account aswell as my usual ntl account.Tried to sign in to googlemail but a window came up for me to change to gmail from googlemail .After several attempts I managed to set it up.Problem now is I can`t access anything on my phone.I have gone into settings,then accounts & sync settings/manage accounts.I tap my googlemail account and get into data & sync.I touch sync gmail but nothing happens.What can I do?
