Using printed coupons at Tesco

I'm in Worcester where both our stores have self-service machines.
I have some times and telegraph vouchers, so say for example I buy a paper for 60p on a weekday and use a Telegraph 40p off and a Times 30p off coupon together, would it work and give me the paper for free?
And what if the credit value of the vouchers exceeds the total price of the transaction?
Also what is this about not being able to use more than one brand of voucher?
Sorry but I've been embarrassed once and I don't want it to happen ever again!!!spacey

This is my very first post!
I used to work at Tescos. The rules about taking coupons varies from manager to manager, store to store. I think the official policy is that it is up to the individual store to set their own rules.
The 'official' line at my store was that they would accept a coupon if it scanned & it would normally only scan if that particular store stocked the product. Cashiers were instructed to only accept one of each different coupon & also to limit the total number of coupons to 10, but only if the total amount saved was less than 10% of the total bill.
I think the policy is applied more stringently in the daytime when most of the staff on the checkouts tend to be full-timers who need their jobs. If you go in the evenings you are more likely to get a part timer who is just working there for extra cash.
My own personal policy was to accept any coupon that scanned, but only if the customer was nice to me! If the customer treated me like dirt I would become a jobsworth (oooooooooooh the power ha ha)
Loads of customers think you must be thick if you are working on a checkout at Tesco so why disappoint them? I can be as thick as they expect.
When the self service tills were introduced they accepted any coupon that scanned & any amount of coupons. Tesco have now programmed the self scanners to seek staff assistance if the value of the coupons exceeds a certain amount.
It takes a while for them to catch on the scams but they usually get there in the end.
I think Sainsburys have the right idea. They know that Tesco accept their coupons so regularly send Sainsbury vouchers to Tesco customers - I saw one a couple of weeks ago that was save £8 when you spent £15. Great way to reduce Tesco profits!
And they still made £2 billion profit.0 -
How's the quality of these cartridges? Needed a black one in a hurry and bought Tesco's today for £3.93, so money wasted there! TIA.2005CLAIRE wrote:Superfurry, I have bought a cheap printer £30 delivered epson c46
and bought my ink from 7dayshop.com for £1.99 each cartridge - black and colour - I have saved a fortune - the vouchers print out well and you will get your money back off the printer in no time via the savings.0 -
There was a discussion about this a while ago. I emailed Tesco and asked them their policy. Everyone seems to gets the same email reply.
Quote:...includes coupons printed from the internet and these are accepted in all our stores......
I printed off the email and I take it to Tesco's with me. Once when a cashier said they didn't accept them I showed them the email and asked them to get the manager. They took the coupon.0 -
Thank Chas! Great stuff
So would a 30p off voucher for The Times work in getting me a local newspaper costing 30p for free?? And what if I use two vouchers in combination (30p + 40p) to get a national paper for 50p or 60p? What if there is a credit at the end of the transaction? Would it work if I used two 30p off Times vouchers to get a 60p paper free, or any other product?? (I'm talking about the self-service only)
What about more chunky discounts like £1 off Gilette? Would these all work on the self-scan if the product isn't bought without "staff assistance needed" coming up?spacey

My Tesco sells the Express for 20p, Mon-Fri. I usually use the 20p coupon (in OK magazine every week) and get it for free.spaceage wrote:So would a 30p off voucher for The Times work in getting me a local newspaper costing 30p for free?? And what if I use two vouchers in combination (30p +0

Hi, Chas
Many thanks for the info.
Would let us know more about this "certain amount"? Is it a percentage of your total purchase, or an absolute value?
I really need more vouchers...0 -
Hi There,
Another newbie here.
I work for tesco (checkouts now). When these computer printed coupons first appeared we were told to accept them and treat them like any other coupon.
We are allowed to accept one coupon if you have not bought the item but 2 if you have bought one of it. We are allowed to accepted a percentage of the bill but this changes from week to week. Last time I asked a manager she was unsaure what the % was!
From experience if you do not push your luck you will get away with it. People who try to pay 95% of their bill with vouchers and then make a fuss when refused generally get little. Be sensible.
Like another lady said on this post earlier because we work on checkouts does not make us thick. Be nice to us - it works in your favour!
Good Luck

My local Asda are currently taking about £20 a week off me in coupons (all types) though I call in about three times to spread them about.Today I called in local Tesco and the cashier (young lad) would not accept any as the products were not bought. There was even a newspaper voucher for the Financial Times that he would not take and I did buy The Times (close).I said nothing as I know it seems to change from week to week but Asda have been accepting all types since Christmas.Guest.0
