I would be inclined to agree with Hasbeen above. The manhole is probably forming a hard spot under the floor which has remained level and the remainder of the floor has dropped around it.

As for its use. My money would be on an old backfilled well or rainwater cistern.
  • Its like the horror film The Ring, they had a well under their house.
Don't open it unless you want a creepy ghost girl climbing up your walls.
  • Thanks for the responses guys n gals. Some funny ones there. As far as I am aware there are no bodies or Poltergeists hiding there.
So.... Back to the manhole.... On her further inspection the Hole itself turned out to be a Red Herring. It was some bricks arranged in a way that appeared there was a Hole. We also formed this opinion because next to that "hole" which is now not a hole, there is a pipe (Porcelain/pot type) about the same size as a Soil pipe. This Pipe raises under the floor (where the crack began) and goes down into the floor at a 45 degree angle. I'm wondering if this Pipe is actually connected. I'm wondering if it actually does anything. Whether it is or not there is still this problem that 'Something' has caused the floor to arc up (obviously caused by Water pressure). Any other ideas peeps?
