Additional learner driver does she needs insurance?

Hi All!

Now at 38 I've managed to encourage my wife to take driving lessons and she has done really well. In fact she took her first practical exam yesterday but unfortunately she failed.

We have decided to cut her expenses by not taking many lessons with the driving instructor and instead have more practiced on my car.

Am I right in saying that I need to insure her as a learner on my car? Does anyone knows if it's cheaper with norwich union with an additonal learner driver? or should I go for another insurer as my policy expires in 2 months time?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

  • You need to read your policy, ie only you or any driver over 25 etc. I expect that you will need to add her to your policy, an extra £1000 for my DD and a £650 excess. ( We dwcided not to do it, but to buy more professional lessons)yours could be lower as the learner is older but not much I guess as her inexperience can still do a lot of damage to other drivers. The insurance comparison sites let you put a provisional driver in for a quote. Don`t forget to check quidco for cashback once you have decided who to go with. We had £110 back from LLoyds.

Adding a wife who's presumably in her 30s to your policy isn't going to cost anything like the £1,000 that bg quoted for adding a daughter.

It's rarely going to be worth cancelling your current policy and taking out a new one. Just ask NU what they want to add her and see if it seems reasonable. If you cancel, you'll probably get nothing or next to nothing back on your annual premium at this stage in your policy year.

.....And you will lose the no claims you have built up for this year for cancelling 2 months before the policy ends
