Last year I wanted to plant spuds for xmas, novelty/talking point really, but,
Intending to plant in Aug, I found all stock sold by about end June and no new stuff in until September, tried and failed with 2nd week Sept planting.
When do you buy your late late crop spuds?

I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Hi. Two year ago now, but if memory serves correct I think I bought mine around July time. I got mine on Ebay though as I only wanted a small quantity. Was happy with the results, although not a massive crop, maybe down to time of year?

Hmmm, yeah that's what I thought but all the local places had gone with fashion and shipped in other stuff by then.
I will buy earlier this year, or keep a better eye on stocks, thanksI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

I know you shouldn't really do it.. but I used to buy some potatoes from the supermarket and when any started to shoot in the kitchen around Aug, I just kept them and popped them in the ground for Christmas potatoes.. It used to be the beginning of August for me as I live in Scotland and it needs just the bit longer to grow before the cold winter sets in..
I hope this helps0 -
Sorry for sounding a little naive, but why shouldn't you use supermarket potatoes? I've bought charlottes in August a couple of times to plant for Christmas. They don't need chitting, and they're always lovely!:j I always buy seed pots for the other crops, but second mains are hard to come by.0

You have a good point, potatoes ALWAYS available in supermarkets..
Given that you really only want small/young new pots for Xmas it sounds like a plan. :T:TI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
