Can anyone help me please? Would be very grateful of any advice.
I want to set up a website (which I am going to get someone else to build for me).
I have (finally) found a name which I want ... and I want to buy the domains up asap (just incase they dissapear whilst I am trying ot find someone to build my site).
Problem is - I don't know where to start. Can I buy just the domain on it's own? (and will I then be able to obtain complete control over it). I don't want to have it hosted by the people I buy the domain from (I want the people who build my site to host it for me).
Can anyone recommend the best site to buy my domain from? (reliable, not going to rip me off)
Sorry for the rambling ... thanks in advance

yes you can but a domain by itself
if you buy it from the likes of http://www.123reg.co.uk (I use them) you can then point the domain to your website when you have it ready.
If you are planning on making a big website it might be worthwhile registering several variations of the domain.
e.g. mysite.com, mysite.net and mysite.co.uk.0
