When do supermarkets take payment for online orders please?!

Hi there!

I'm looking to do an online food shop for the first time but was wondering...If I place an order today for a delivery on Thursday, when will the payment be taken from my debit card?

Will they take the payment today or on the day of delivery?

I only ask because it's my day off today but I don't get paid until Thursday.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I've done a search but can't find an answer!

Thank you in advance!

Good question - and one I'd be curious to find out, too! I have no idea ...

Cos how can you be gloomy, when the sun shines out your bum? :D
  • I'm not 100% sure but I would assume they take the payment on the day of delivery as prices could vary between the day of ordering and the time it's picked and packed especially with special offers or products priced by weight.

I'm sure it's the day of delivery because you are warned on Tesco about the offers not being available for the delivery day you've requested. Plus you don't know until it's packed if they have everything in, so they shouldn't charge until it's packed.....

    Happy moneysaving all.

Tesco take £2 when you place the order (to check the card works, this is later refunded) then the full payment is taken on the day of delivery - usually a few hours before it arrives.

Sainsburys are the same if I remember correctly, not sure about ASDA though.

    Hope that helps :)
  • Thank you so much for your replies!

Everything you all say makes total sense now! (regarding the offers etc)

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question....I'm off to place my first ever online food shop....Now where did I put that discount code?!

    Hi,

I do an odd online shop with Asda & it's always the day of the delivery that the payment is taken as thats when they do your shop for you.

Its taken on the day of delivery as the prices you pay will be the prices at the day of delivery. If something is on offer, you got to have the order delivered before or on the date the offer ends. Sainsburys offers end on a Tuesday and if you order on Monday to deliver on Thursday, you pay the Thursday price.

When you place an order, it will give you a rough price and give/take up to 5%. As if you buy things like loose produce, joints of meat, the price varies. When you select you want 4 bananas, the price quoted will be the average price of 4 bananas.

Asda borrow 1p when you checkout.

If you make changes and need to checkout again - they borrow another 1p from your card.

Waitrose once delivered the shopping despite lack of payment due to a bank glitch and took the money two days later.

Ocado driver told me that Ocado takes it after the shopping is delivered because of needing to adjust subs - seems weird to me.

They payment is taken on the day of delivery, just make sure you have £2 in your account to cover to the 'deposit', they just hold upto this amount to make sure its a legitimate order and that the card is valid. All supermarkets are the same no matter who you shop with, I shop with them all, they all work the same, and the all take pretty much the same amount. As another poster said remember the price of your basket can fluctuate but it wont be anymore than about 5% not even that. I normally have an extra 30-70p on top of the guide price when its delivered due to weights of loose items etc. If its excessive I ring up and complain for a partial refund. EXAMPLE - you ask for 1kg of lamb charged at £3.99 and they send you a 2kg and charge you £8, that to me is not fair, I ring and request a refund as I only requested a 1kg joint not 2kg so have been unfairly charged. This rarely happens, but just leave £5 leeway in your budget incase of 'emergency' or they wont deliver your goods.
