If you are a couple, does one person have to work over 30 hours, or is it a combination of two persons hours please?

Those without dependents and disabilities are expected to work 30 hours each to receive WTC - perish the thought that healthy adults with dependents receive WTC for a 15 hour (2 day per week) job.
However, parents with children can work 24 hours between them with at least one of them undertaking 16 of it.0 -
Hi, we have a toddler and my husband has 2 jobs, one he is self employed and one he is employed, so we only take the 28 hours he is actually employed into the tax credits equation, just in case. I work 30 hours but have had my hours dropped to 25. I just wondered if it would affect us.0

When/if you have children you will get help. Pensioners get a good deal and a lot of perks but theres no point being envious, we will get it if we get in that situation.
Under universal credits the conditionality is changing and if you have no children under 5 you will be expected to do 35 hours at nmw as a single parent and 35 hours for each, in a couple. So this apparent unfairness is being addressed.
All I would say is imagine being a single mum with 3 kids, 6, 7 and 9 year olds, who just had their husband leave them. Juggling that with 35 hours a week job could be considered a little harsh but we will see I suppose.0 -

Agreed, but some work 70 hours a week and never see their kids. It's what is considered reasonable along with allowing a proper upbringing for the children so they become good members of society.0 -
Are you sure a couple without children would have to work 30 hours each to qualify for WTC? My sister works 30 hours but her husband only works 10 at the moment and they get it.0

They are asking them to do 35 once their children are teenagers, not 70 hours for a baby.0
