Certegy Charge

This isn't regarding a bank charge but I just wondered if anyone knew anything about Certegy. My husband had a cheque bounce in Argos and of course his bank charged him for this. He then received numerous letters from certegy stating that he had to pay them a further £48.50. My husband has refused to pay this as he thinks the bank charge is bad enough. After several letters he has now received one from a debt enforcement agency wanting to recover this debt ( which is now £58.50). They state that they will use all approved methods to recover this debt and I just wondered what this meant and if we should just pay this and forget about it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My story is pretty much exactly the same as the previous thread. The cheque that bounced was re presented and cleared - no problem. Then I have the bill for these "admin fees" at £48.50 which has now increased to £58.50 now these debt collection agency is involved.
I have tried to call the number on the letter to dispute the charges -no answer. Mailbox full.
Do they have any legal right to ask for these charges? If they come to the door demanding money do I have a legal right to send them on their way?

Even if you owe money legally they actually have no rights to knock on your door and demand money. Doorstep collectors (as opposed to baliffs) have no more right to knock on your door than you or I. Occording to OFT guidelines they should male an appointment with you before they call and should not embarass you in front of your neighbours. DCA's flagrantly flout these rules and send big blokes round to intimidate. I gave a collector a piece of my mind a few months back (mind you I was 41 weeks pregnant and very hormonal lol). You can write to them an expressly forbid them to come on your property. You can tell em to bog off and if they don't go call the police on them for tresspass.
I doubt the charges have any legal basis, your contraict is the cheque you wrote to the supermarket etc. No contract= no signed terms and conditions=no charges. They may argue they are an admin charge, but do you think they could prove the level of the charge in front of a judge (see banks charges
) Tell em to whistle for it. good luck.

BTW the CAB and the other debt advice charities advise, and I agree, never talk to DCA's over the phone. Do all contacts in writing. Over the phone they will exegerate, threaten, cajole and outright lie to get you to pay.
Good luck

i have posted on here about B&Q doing the same to me i too incured a service fee of £48.50 now increased to £58.50 if we take the view that as with bank charges these fees are illegal, surely it must be blackmail to threaten you with any action if you dont pay up or am i missing something?0

Next Instalment of Certegy fiasco!
I wrote to Certegy telling them I thought the charge was unfair and to stop chasing it other wise I will go to court. I also asked them to break down and justify the charges and said if they sent anyone round, I would call the police. I get a card through the door today saying someone is going to come round on Tuesday between 9am and 9pm.
There was a number to call to say if it was incovienient. I rang and said it was not convienient EVER! and if someone did come round I would call the police.
The bloke said he was from Transax and nothing to do with the collection agency. SO WHY WAS THE NUMBER ON THE CARD!!!
He then said If I did not pay then they would take ME to court. I explained that the money due to Sports World had been paid and so therefore my contract had ended. He said they had received my letter but had not had a chance to respond yet. So I said if that is the case, why are they still going to send a collector round? Again nothing to do with him.
I ended the conversation by saying if anyone did come round I would call the police.
What now? I still think they will send someone round. Can they take me to court. Would they have a case?0
