HPI & Insurance Write offs

Looking to buy a new car and I asked a dealer by email if the car was HPI clear and was it an insurance write off.

The dealer replied "HPI Clear"

Does this included things like Insurance write-offs and thefts etc?

The HPI register lists insurance right-offs, if its been registered stolen, mileage discrepancies, if it has registered outstanding secured finance.

I assume you asked the dealer if its HPI clear, you knew what you were asking!?

  • If you arent happy that the answer is explicit enough go back and ask for them to confirm exactly what you want.

HPI Clear is a little too vague for my tastes if I asked an explicit question about insurance write offs

I would just like to add that the HPI check will not show if a car has been in a crash and has been repaired if it has been done without going through an insurance company.

yep, but it also won't show if a car has been in a crash and been repaired by an insurance company.

HPI shows that a car has been in a crash and the insurance company has decided to write it off rather than repair

If your worried get the car properly inspected and do the HPI check yourself.

A proper HPI, RAC, AA not a £3 text check.

Good advice above, never skimp on the HPI Check, the better ones are indemnified.
    Be happy...;)
  • Ask the dealer for a copy of the certificate they will be able to print one off to show you. When you do a HPI check the result that comes back from HPI clear. This means clear on all registers
