HPI & Insurance Write offs

Looking to buy a new car and I asked a dealer by email if the car was HPI clear and was it an insurance write off.

The dealer replied "HPI Clear"

Does this included things like Insurance write-offs and thefts etc?

The HPI register lists insurance right-offs, if its been registered stolen, mileage discrepancies, if it has registered outstanding secured finance.

I assume you asked the dealer if its HPI clear, you knew what you were asking!?

If you arent happy that the answer is explicit enough go back and ask for them to confirm exactly what you want.

HPI Clear is a little too vague for my tastes if I asked an explicit question about insurance write offs

I would just like to add that the HPI check will not show if a car has been in a crash and has been repaired if it has been done without going through an insurance company.

yep, but it also won't show if a car has been in a crash and been repaired by an insurance company.

HPI shows that a car has been in a crash and the insurance company has decided to write it off rather than repair

If your worried get the car properly inspected and do the HPI check yourself.

A proper HPI, RAC, AA not a £3 text check.

Good advice above, never skimp on the HPI Check, the better ones are indemnified.

Ask the dealer for a copy of the certificate they will be able to print one off to show you. When you do a HPI check the result that comes back from HPI clear. This means clear on all registers
