It sounds like it has become a game to be honest.
Getting quicker and sharper each time you win in keeping it on the table.
I suggest you don't reach for it, and use very firm sharp words.
I also wonder if this might be when he gets the most amount of undivided attention from you.
Perhaps you have a deal that when he has eaten his food without throwing it that he will get a game with you, or play at dressing up etc.
That way he equates good behaviour with a treat0
