Surely selling vouchers when you know your in financial trouble is fraud

  • So the government steps in and changes the law on gift vouchers - where does it then end? What about all of the other creditors that are owed money from HMV?

Should the government insist that all suppliers of stock are paid in full? What about landlords, cleaning contractors and other service providers? Should they be paid out in full? After all, if the consumers aren't allowed to lose out, why should those who are owed significantly more be allowed to lose out? Before you know it, you've completely undermined the whole reason behind the administration process.

They could at least make sure that money is held in a separate account until the money is spent in store then it could be transferred into the companies cash account.

It would be good to see the end of store specific gift vouchers unless there is protection put in place for this money. It is after all just a contract to deliver something in the future and until that is delivered the contract is not complete
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.
  • I usually buy vouchers for a shopping centre, rather than a particular shop. Saves headaches like this

I would rather give vouchers than cash - if someone gives me cash - I would probably save it or spend it on normal everyday stuff so it doesn't seem like a present.
Vouchers - I will actually go and spend them and I know everytime I look at the thing I bought that I bought that with a lvoely gift voucher from xxxx.

Cash as a gift is thoughtless - vouchers at least you have actually made the effort to go to the shops and buy something.

If you choose the shop wisely they should be safe enough

One suggestion I heard before (probably here on MSE somewhere...) is to give cash (because its safe, as explained); but dress it up a little with a suggestion of where/what the person might like to spend it on. That way it's not much different from giving a voucher; there's still the same kind of thought gone into it but the cash value is safe (relatively speaking), and they are not completely tied to only where you have suggested.

    Thanks for the interesting comments.

I've just tried to phone two stores to ask about my 'now worthless' gift card but couldn't get through.

A relative always gave me a gift card for Christmas, despite me trying to say .. cash is better. And to make it worse, it was always an HMV card.

Keep an eye on the news. It's the administrators who make the decision about whether or not gift cards are accepted so stores probably wont know until it's public.

That said Sky news is reporting they wont be accepted for now.

  • Bit daft buying them in the 1st place , HMV have been on the brink for months and now they finally have gone into administration

Cue a slew of sob stories like the comet debacle with people having £100s worth of useless vouchers

If they knew they were in trouble then they shouldn't sell gift cards knowing they was a strong chance they weren't going to honour them.

Its all very well saying you shouldn't have bought them but I don't suppose you had to deal with an upset child whose Xmas present is now worthless.

Not everyone - particularly older people (ie. grandparents) would have realised.

We should start a boycott of the fire sale until they Change their minds like comet did. I bet the majority of gift cards are held by children.

I have never understood gift vouchers ?
Unless they offer a huge discount, surely the "Bank of England Version" is much more flexible.
    Be happy...;)
