Road Tax

I wonder if the government would dare end the unjustified tax distortions which subsidise electric and hybrid cars. If so it would be difficult to be critical.
It is well overdue that the lie of zero emissions be banned from all marketing and discussion.
They could also improve the amount of tax collected by requiring better proof of manufacturers' claimed consumption figures, some of which have improved from 55 to 75 mpg for the same model in a remarkably short time, and nobody can achieve the new figures in real world use.0 -

Reduced/No car tax (VED) was put into place along with the scrappage scheme, to give people an excuse to spend money on new cars during the recession, all just to boost the failing automotive sector within the UK.
Let's face it, most people only need an excuse to buy a new car......“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Exactly, and after the initial splurge most of those who were going to buy a new car on the strength of lowered or zero VED did! Just as those who scrapped perfectly good cars under the scrapage scheme have now scrapped!
So its time to screw them! Reclaim the lost revenue and find some new scheme to make money from consumers in the interests of 'boosting the economy'.0 -
Scrap VED in its current form for private individuals. Charge a one off fee of £20 for everyone each year, which will also cover leccy cars, after all they use the roads so they should contribute. Add 10/15p a litre to price of fuel, but allow VAT reg business to claim the 15p back. Make any foreign vehicles have to pay the £20 too (EU probably won't allow it though) if they enter country for each 12 month period
Its fairer, so someone driving 30k a year will contribute more to roads than someone driving 3k, higher MPG cars will still be rewarded, plus less cars will be scrapped, people won't have to suddenly find £200 odd quid every 6 or 12 months.
There, can of fanta later and I've just saved the UK.
People who drive 30k are already paying more via fuel duty. A crazy idea like this would be the end of the UK haulage industry! Not to mention 1,000's of jobs.0 -

Why? Did you read my post? I suggested VAT reg companies like haulage firms would be able to claim this back. See, I thought of everything.0 -
A different persepctive?
Creating the free road tax band at its current rate has succeeded, more cars are now produced that use less fuel and pollute less.
Lets now progressively reduce the qualifying level encouraging manufacturers to produce cars that are even greener?0 -

I think even if cars could run on seawater this government would tax it.0 -

You should be an MP with thoughts like that.
Thae average person drives 12000 miles a year, your idea would leave them vastly worse off.
Why should we pay more to drive than any other country in the world?
Also Scotland is something like 80% rural this would impact us even more, however all parts of the UK have rural areas with no public transport so they need cars.0
