NI Credits with a private pension?

Does anyone know for certain please; is it possible to get NI credits if you are unemployed, under retirement age, but receiving a substantial private pension?
The only HMRC guidance I can find states you must be receiving JSA to get NI Credits if you are out of work. I don't know if this wording is technically accurate. Can you get the credits if you are signing on but not getting benefits on eligibility grounds? If so, can anyone o=point to any official published guidance on this?

I think there is a JSA credits only claim form... basically you claim JSA are told you do not qualify for conts-based JSA or income-based JSA so you become a credit-only claim subject to all the same rules as everyone else claiming JSA.
I am sure it will be in the JSA regulations 1996 somewhere.0 -
YES you can - my DH was in this situation - you do need to sign on every two weeks - which counts you as CLAIMING JSa - the fact that NO payment of JSA is irrelevent - signing on covers your NI stamp
I can absolutely state this is 100% true0 -
My partner had the same after she came off Contribution based JSA and this is from the letter.
We cannot pay you Jobseeker's allowance from 23rd October 2009, We cannot pay you because you have as much or more money coming in than the law says you need to live on.We may still credit you with Class 1 National Insurance Contributions if you continue to attend the Jobcentre
It does say "We MAY..." But they did in her case.Worth a shot anyway. If you get a goodly pension and it turns out they won't give you credits, you can purchase them as a last resort. :-)0
