Anyone else suffer with Batophobia/fear of heights?

Hello there,

Long term lurker/reader, first time poster! I'm not sure if this is in the right place, but the employment board seemed wrong.

Today, I had a trust induction at a large hospital, I was due to have this in November but lost my nerve. I have a debilitating fear of tall buildings and heights, this hospital has both tall buildings (8-12 storeys) and overlooks the city, I lasted until lunchtime...

Does anyone else suffer from Batophobia? Has any sort of therapy helped you managed your condition? Rescue remedy doesn't touch it, was thinking of trying rock rose flower remedy, just to see if it helps, although I'm going to have to let that particular job go I think!

Any hints or tips would be great, the city in question is Leeds and I've only recently moved here, seemed a great idea at the time and don't want to leave, I want to be able to manage my condition.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Sounds like you need a visit to your local friendly GP to get some counselling type help. A friend of mine was petrified of caterpillars (worms and other insects were fine) and she got some fantastic support to overcome that.

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

as Batophobia is a fear of tall buildings and being in tall buildings - I am surprised you have chosen to live in a city.
I would suggest hypnotherapy as it can be effective!
  • Maybe you could try some cbt (cognitive behavioural therapy) it does seem to work for phobias.
I once had an embarrassing experience in the War Museum in Salford. We went up in a lift and part of the floors were glass and it really felt horrible. Had to go right back down in the lift. I just avoid as much as possible now which I know isn't right.

I once worked in Tower 42 (Nat West Tower) in London, and couldn't face being close to the windows. I also went up the outside lifts in the Lloyds building a few times and they freaked me out.

I have no problem with flying though

No solutions, but you have my sympathy. I am not at all good with heights and once disgraced myself totally by passing out cold when I was visiting someone at the Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. I was fine until I went too close to the windows ...
