Getting the hang of DLNA but ...

Options
I'm working with a windows 7 64bit system fitted with a Black Gold TV Tuner Card (which is excellent by the way). I also have a Samsung 7000 series 'Smart' TV. I wanted to be able to watch programs I recorded on the PC using the Samsung TV. First attempt was to use the inbuilt Windows DLNA server but it didn't recognise the formats.

I ended up installing Serviio and using the transcoder and I can now successfully play programs recorded using Windows Media Centre and the Blackgold tuner (both SD and HD).

Job done but... when I use the Source button on the Samsung TV, in addition to getting Serviio included in the source list, I'm still getting the Windows DLNA servers included in the list (and I use the plural of server since I get an entry on the list for each account I've got set up on my PC).

Does anybody know how to completely switch off the default Windows DLNA server without affecting Serviio? I've done what has been suggested on this website but the server is still running and appearing on the TV's source list - it just doesn't access any content.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

you probably need to reset the TV's client or get it to forget it's stored settings

Edited Probably allshare settings .... delete or block

Thanks, I'll have to have a go - didn't think about looking whether I can do something on the TV to stop them being displayed. Can't do it now - family's watching something.

B*gg*r. Have just checked again and it's not playing HD (looked like it was but it was just skipping to the next program that was SD.

So I have another question - is it possible to play HD recorded programs from the PC onto my Samsung TV via DLNA?

  • Theoretically yes but I don't know squat about Serviio nor your TV's capablities , it also depends on the container of the file on the PC (eg .mp4 .ts etc) plus the connection between them (speed)

Since Serviio appears to have its own DLNA server built-in, have you tried disabling the Windows DLNA service?

I suspect that if it's running it will continue to be seen as a valid server, even if you set it so that it can't serve any content...

BTW, is your Black Gold tuner the quad one? I tried one of those last year, but had to send it back, as it did not seem to tune 100% reliably (IIRC about one in six attempts to tune to a given channel resulted in an unwatchable stream).

Thanks, that did the trick - TV no longer sees Windows DLNA

It's the dual tuner one - have not had problems with tuning at all. Seems very stable. Only minor observation, it sometimes fails to play sound in HD and you have to change channel and switch back again.

Have just checked this again again. It appears to play one HD recording OK but not others. I'll have to do some more digging into the Serviio forum.
