I'm looking for a new laptop, as mine doesn't last more than 3 minutes without needing to be plugged in! It is three years old though so guess it's served me well
Not really sure what to look for. I use my laptop for the internet, Family Tree Maker/Ancestry, photos - I have LOTS as have done lots of travelling/holidays, music and then will want Word/Excel/PowerPoint as I don't have this at the moment and it drives me mad. I don't want a package with this though, I will sort it out later. Unless obviously the package makes it cheaper!
I don't really have a budget as I know that I can keep on spending and get a better and better one but there has to be a limit just not sure how good a laptop I should get.
Someone has mentioned SSD but not sure what benefits this has and if it's worth the presumed extra cost.
I have looked at a HP and also seen a decent deal on a Dell - both with i5 (guessing this is best to get!?). Any thoughts on these makes? My current laptop is acer.
Any tips, opinions etc would be good.
TIA

A battery and something to backup your data is cheaper.
There are lots of similar threads every day!!

It is cheaper but I use my laptop daily and it's annoying having to use the battery all the time.
The laptop is also really slow and has since I dropped it over a year ago kept having little blips where it stops working. I am therefore wanting to buy one before it completely dies!0 -
Don't understand the battery point, the 1st post suggests your battery doesn't hold charge, the second not sure what it means, but appears to contradict the first?
There's a thread above all about how to stop machines being slow.
have you backed up?!!

Sorry, I'm not explaining it properly! Basically to use my laptop it has to be plugged in.
When I dropped the laptop a while ago it clearly harmed it in some way and therefore keeps having occasional moments, every month or so where it dies and then comes back to life!
I have backed up to an external hard drive.0 -
Your machine probably have problem on battery or charging battery.0

Personally won't go for HP/ Dell. They are neither cheapest nor better quality.

For a Word/Excel/PowerPoint software package just download Libre Office for free.
You can change the default Save As settings to MS Word equivalents.0
