Gas & Electric estimate?

Hey all,

Moving out of student halls at the end of June and we've been looking at flats/houses.

Currently the 2 bed house we've seen will leave us with about £120 a month for gas, electric, water and internet bill, not taking into around low use of gas, electric and water during holidays which means we will only live there about 30 weeks of the year.

The 2 bed house we have seen has gas central heating, gas hob. The only problem is I don't know what to expect in terms of bills, either kWh or £, especially as my girlfriend would be cold inside an oven so she will be turning up the heat when she is home (Although I will try my best to stop her :p)

Do you guys have any idea as to what we might be expecting in gas and electric bills?

Depends on a lot of variables, but around £100 per month if you're there during the winter and you want the place warm. Since you will be away 22 weeks of the year, make sure you are on a no standing charge tarriff so that you don't pay when you're not there.

Ask the current tenants what their bills are.

According to Ofgem, typical domestic energy consumption is 16,500 kWh pa for gas and 3,300 kWh pa for electricity. If you really have no idea at all then these figures might be a good staring point until you get a year's statements to refer to.

The typical consumption provided by ofgem that big six use depends on number of bedrooms and number of occupants. but it is VERY rough, best bet is to speak to current occupant like advised above. That will give you an idea but may still be off by quite a way. also bear in mind about standing charge tariffs...if your going to be there more over autumn/winter than spring summer you need to do some sums. call supplier and ask for their gas sculpting figures as 1000KWh in June costs a LOT less than same ammount in Jan as in winter more units are charged at higher rate than in summer. This could mean that a SC tariff saves money overall, but be careful as many tariffs have exit fees which can often hit students who may not always stay in property for the life of the tariff. If you need help with this pm me and ill help with your working out.

A house with gas CH and DHW will be a lot cheaper to heat than one with electric heating, by a factor of around 3.
Everything else being equal of course (which it won't be).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
