Car Warranty (repairs etc)

Are these Warranties worth having?
I have a 6 yr old car, with about 60k on the clock. You can get warrantues for £99 or a lot more per year.

Are they worth having, for peace of mind? Or are they a rip-off?

The one I bought WITH the car was definitely a rip-off - it covered UP TO £1000 per year, for a cost of about £300 for the first year.

    Don't waste your money.
  • A manufacturer's warranty is a far better deal than one of these 'off the shelf' ones. Third party warranties don't cover as much.

Not worth the paper they're written on.

I always think of third party warranties akin to so called "warranties" offered by Comet or alike.......Don't waste your money. There are many stories where they do not pay out blaming it on "wear and tear"

I actually bought a warranty a couple of months ago after a terrible worry of possible £5k damage to my cars engine which was just out of manufacturers warrant and which the main dealer initially put down to our fault by misfuelling (we hadnt but to be honest we began to wonder if we had or if the fuel at the pump had been contaminated).

As it happens it was an exhaust, not engine prob and the £1k cost was covered by the manufacturer as only just out of 3 years. However it did worry me a lot and I checked out the manufacturers extended warranty but was stunned at the amount of things that were excluded including even parts damaged by uninsured parts!

After a lot of soul searching and internet searching I have bought a 3 year warranty with Warranty Direct. They seem to have the best reviews and write ups and they include virtually everything includig wear and tear - they even threw in a free MOT at the main dealer every year. Get a quote, wait a week and then they make reduced offer to you. Our offer was for main dealer work but at the independent dealer premium cost. Plus we were given air bag etc. cover and the MOTs

I agree the second hand car dealers "warranties" are rubbish but these warranties seem very comprehensive, quite expensive but not in comparison with what real car problems could cost us in the future.

Posts 2 and 4 are tosh.

My warranty has already paid out more than twice its cost in claims.

There are some good warranties out there but some poor ones too.

Here's an earlier discussion which covers many of the point to look at when assessing warranties:

There's nothing wrong with deciding just to self-insure, as long as you accept the risk that an expensive part might fail and cost way more than a warranty would have.

I bought an extended 5 year warranty/100k mile (whichever comes first). I'd say hey are worth every penny as my warranty company have already paid out more than double the cost of the warranty..... so I would ignore the posts that claim theyre a waste..... mine certainly wasn't!

These warranties are great for the warranty company and people that wish to insure items that do not wear out and never break.

If you have parts on the car that wear or break then dont bother.
