Late Tax Return Completion! Help Pleaseee!

Hey everyone,

I got a letter Friday from HM Revenue & Customs informing me that I owe them £1211.49 due to my tax returns from 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 not being completed.

I was self employed during the 2008/2009 year but ended that job two weeks into the 2009/2010 tax year and went back to college and didn't return to work till June in the 2010/2011 tax year this time not as self employed.

Anyway, I called them today to explain to them that this is the first time I was aware of the situation and they said they've sent me numerous letters to one of my old addresses.

I obviously don't want to have to pay this large amount of money expecially considering the £1211.49 I supposedly owe them consist of £1200 worth of late/admin charges.

I understand I'm partly to blaim as I didnt inform them of my address change and not filled in my tax returns but i thought that as soon as i finish workin self employed i wouldnt have to fill in any more tax returns as standard!

Please help people because I'm dead worried about the whole situation, and any form of help will be GREATLY appreciated.

PS I know near to nothing about the tax system

Thanks in advance

  • Partly? You are 100% to blame.

It's not HMRC's fault that you went self employed without bothering to research your responsibilities.

You'll have to pay up I'm afraid.

Bad idea, being self employed and clueless about tax. As far as I can see, you are entirely to blame for this mess. HMRC are not psychic! Have you asked them if you can appeal this decision?
  • Matty, I used a website called simpletaxreturns.com to complete mine this year. Was only £49. Worth considering!! You need to get your 2012 return in quick!
  • hmm, two virtually identical posts to recommend a company, even when really irrelevant here, poster reported as spammer.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
