Huge Bill Of Npower Due To Transposed Metre Readings?!

Hi Just wondering if anyone would be able to help me, i have been in my current property just over 2 years, (2 Bedroom Flat) i moved in May 2012, when i set up my Electricity i started paying £51 a month, i have paid this set amount for the entire time i have lived here up until October, where i received a letter from Npower saying they where upping my bill to £100 as i owed nearly £300 so £75 for my increased usage and the rest to pay back the debt of £300 over the term. So this was set up and i agreed i would pay the amount, so October and November i paid £100 but Decembers dd wasnt taken, i rang them today and they basically told me it was a mistake and i didnt owe them the £300 and my dd would be going back down to £51....then she asked for meter readings, then hit me with "Oh these readings are transposed" Cut a long story short, they have been this way the entire time ive been in the flat, she could not tell me the exact amount im going to Owe but its going to be around £4000 im absolutely gutted as ive never missed a payment and as far as i was concerned i was paying enough as was never told otherwise other than October when i increased the amount!. So now im left to worry for god knows how long for a calculation of the exact amount owing. Will they expect me to pay it all back even tho its a mistake on their part? Thanks in Advance.

Did you ever inform them they were billing you incorrectly?

If not, you will have to pay for all the energy you consumed.
  • Legally the electricity companies HAVE to read the meter once in a 2 year period so any misreading and transposed reads may be picked up in this process. However obviously two years is a long time which is why the mantra is never rely on estimates readings so the companies can more accurately work out usage and ergo set direct debits at a level to accurately reflect consumption levels.

Pet Peeves.... queues, vain people and hypocrites ..not necessarily in that order.
  • Yet another transposed meter , same old story also. The meter readers are primarily at fault having not been properly trained in telling night from day on digital meters with maybe faulty time switches involved to complicate matters. If they cant spot it, why should the occupiers be any better. 4k is a good ammount, I have known a lot more in the past.Nattynoony you must claim that the meter readers have been messing it up, so long as you havent been stopping them seeing the meters for years they will have to drop the claim in the end, but its prob worth Npowers while to have ago at reclaiming from you. Dont allow them to put in a prepay neither to put the debt on that

    Hi nattynoony,

I can see that you have been worried by this but we are here to help and I'd like to get this checked over for you and investigated.

The advisor shouldn't have mentioned any monetary amounts to you without having fully investigated the account/billed it first, so please don't take the £4,000 figure from them as the end result.

If you send all your details to forumresponse@npower.com, I can get this looked into right away for you.

    Best wishes,

    Adam
