Do you mean charge VAT?
You charge VAT when you sell your items to a customer. You pay VAT when you buy something from your suppliers.
I assume you are VAT registered?0 -
haven't started yet. can I register VAT as self employed?0

You can register for VAT as a sole trader if you want to (and must if your turnover is projected to exceed the threashold).
Generally it is only worth doing so voluntarily if your customers are predominately also going to be VAT registered or you are selling a 0% rated product.0
