I just got off the phone to hmrc and din't get to ask a few final questions as my INCREDIBLY loud nephew walked in and I stupidly said thank you bye and put the phone down.
I told hmrc that I was paranoid I was going to accidently submit an error and muck something up. They said once you submit, you get a submission ref. no. and they will, within 3 days, review my submission and contact me if there are any errors. If this is the case, could I get a penalty for submitting an error that I didn't know was an error? They also said a tax return can be amended up to a year later.
This is my first time doing a tax return and am useless at all of this.
Also, I was stuck on the income tax losses section and they said they don't know why that screen is there as it is not applicable to me and to just delete it.

Hi ninkynock
I have just submitted my return today. I am sure you will be fine. Are you giving a breakdown of your outgoings or just the figures?
Have you made a loss this/last year? If not just leave the income tax losses boxes blank or click no (can't remember which it is!).
I am sure if it is your first year submitting and they find a mistake within the next three days they won't fine you!!
Take a deep breath - and give yourself a pat on the back once it's submitted! I always feel a huge amount of relief when it's done!0 -
I hope that if there is an error they will take into consideration I am new. And if they've recorded my phone calls, they can hear how nervous I am and a pile of questions I've been asking - lol!
I made a loss in 2011-12.
I made £800 and expenses were £1000. Total -£200. Because it's so small, I thought putting just the figures would be sufficent.0 -
Ok you enter the losses onto the sheet. On your 2012/13 return you will carry forward the losses from 2011/12
I think! That how I would do it anyway!!
I would just enter the figures only as well - I wouldn't give a breakdown for £1000.
Why not submit it and then ring them with the submission reference in a few days and see if you can talk then through it?0 -
For such a fairly small turnover, expenses and losses, I suspect this is so simple for the hmrc. I guess the losses carried forward would be entered into the box that wanted to know if there were losses brought forward for 2011-12 tax year.
I think I will ring them in a few days after submission. I don't think they can say I didn't try my best
p.s. so when does income tax losses section apply? HMRC said it didn't apply to me.0
