What do I do with the stupid taxman?

I work at waitrose and we got a bonus of 18% and I got taxed like £120 on it. Can I get this back?

I also got taxed this month and some other months as I dont have a tax number. Is this emergency tax, how can I get this back?

I am currently a student and only work 30 hours a month on an avergae of £6.30.

Why am I getting taxed? How do I get it back?

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

If you don't have a tax code then in all probability the tax office don't know you are working for Waitrose so it's up to you or Waitrose to tell them as they don't have a crystal ball. Employers such as Waitrose, Asda, Tescos etc seem to have a habit of using a BR (basic rate 22%) code on their new staff and forgetting to give them a P46 to fill in. The P46 should have been completed by you and forwarded by Waitrose to the tax office so that they could issue you a correct tax code.

Either get in touch with your payroll department or call into your local Inland Revenue Enquiry Centre. The staff there will tell you what you have to do and if you think you might be entitled to a refund of tax they will help with that too.

Try looking through the Inland Revenue - Students section.

These may give you some information in more basic (non IR) speak:
    BBC
    University of Essex

Your Student Union or student welfare office may be able to give you more information.

Find out from Waitrose who where their tax office is - they'll use a central one somewhere in the UK for all employees, or at least regional ones. You'll receive a P60 in a while for the last tax year which will show how much you earnt, what tax & National Insurance you paid and what your tax code was - all information which you'll need when claiming tax back.
