We use Advocate as it covers heartworm as well as fleas. Only available from your vet (or with a prescription online).
  • I use advantage all the time on my cats and dogs and it is great. I buy it online as half the price of the vet from medicines4pets.

I use the one they sell in Aldi from time to time. £1.79 per dose. I don't think they're in the shop at the moment, but it seems to work well on my dog (and a friend's two dogs as well). :)
  • Another vote for Advantage. Other stuff is to expensive with vet prescriptions. My dog and cat don't really mix with other animals and don't live in a rural place so don't really suffer from fleas. However year ago did get fleas from friends dog, who blamed my dog cheek. I used bob martin in the past (what was I thinking) and didn't work. Ordered advantage for my dog and cat and a bottle of indorex.

Advantage worked great and still does. I use it along side drontal worming tablets (Can't believe my old vet tried to charge me £30 for 4 tablets). Drontal is fab and cheap as well can protect my dog for about £7 a year. I washed all pets beds and bedding and sprayed the whole house with indorex (Mean't to last a year and also protects from dustmites!).

So Advantage and Drontal is the way to go :)
Can get Advantage from Vet uk for £18 for 8months supply. Its £10 for 4 months supply. Thats based on the price for dog between 4-10kg which I would imagine a pug is ???

No advocate does though and I think thats generally cheaper than frontline. However have to get it with a prescription. Am going to ask my vet about it and see how much prescriptions are etc. Could maybe buy in bulk with that one prescriptions to save money. (Not sure if they only give you a prescription to get like say 4months protection).

I heard that heartworm is lungworm in UK. According to my cavalier book it says that heartworm is passed on via mosquitos in europe. However we do get lungworm which I think is the same, someone said comes from france *shrugs*. You will know if there is a high risk of lungworm in your area as vets always advertise in the surgery.

I keep my dog on the lead because I walk her in a park where other dogs go and lots of nasty chavs bring there poor dogs to attack others. Just isn't worth the risk. So my dog doesn't really pick up dirt or slugs or anything. If I lived in a slightly more rural place where foxes and slugs then I would defo use Advocate. Gives you piece of mind if not anything else.

Here is a link about lungworm from blue cross

No further dirt/fleas found until 3 weeks later when I combed him and found a couple of fleas under his tail (on his back as he has a curly tail).

Once you've got fleas, you need to change up to prescription medication like Frontline Combo. It's not worth all the hassles messing about with fleas coming back.

OP Already uses Frontline so the first post says. Not sure if combo. Frontline has had alot of bad reviews lately.

As I said Advantage works great for me with my dog and cat. I make sure to treat them every month even if there is no fleas. Its easier if you keep ontop of it, rather than having a flea infestation on your hands. Use the Indorex everywhere made needs 2 cans if you have alot of bedrooms or carpets. Its meant to last a year as well.

I would chose advocate over frontline though if advantage doesn't work.
