When we instructed our solicitor we gave them a cheque for £200 straight away to cover searches so it would be cleared and they could be started as soon as we got the survey back. This is common practice. Just tell them to wait until you instruct them to start the searches. Our solicitor is no completion no fee.0

Hiya,
Ring your solicitors on Monday. Ask them how much they want you to drop off for the local authority searches and if they have heard from your buyer's solicitors yet.
Are you buying through an Estate agent - if so, call them and get them to give you a progress update on the chain. They should also be able to give you and estimate at how soon everythings looking to be tied up.
In my experience, If your surveyors are coming this week, then your mortgage offer should be out in about two weeks time, and once searches are back you'll be looking to exchange.
Good luck.xxxDFW #414, MoneySaver, Income Booster

What searches are they suggesting? The environmental is worth doing as it checks for risks such as flooding, subsidence etc and mining if you are buying in a former coal mining area. The money they are asking for upfront will be for the searches. There's not really any point in talking to the estate agent until you've both had your surveys done.0
