Cashing a cheque without bank account

Options
Hi,
I have been sent a cheque by Santander for a PPI reclaim but I do not have a bank account.

What I was wondering was, can I take that cheque to a Santander branch and cash it there ?

I was hoping that since this was a cheque directly from them, then I would be able to cash it there.

It may be worth contacting Santander and asking them to confirm what their policy on cheque cashing. They may cash the cheque in branch in you have some acceptable ID.

Alternatively you could open a bank account or ask for the cheque to be re-issued in another name so a third party can cash it for you, or if your desperate you could take it a cheque cashing place no doubt they will charge you though.

You can take it to a pawnbrokers, they will take a small percentage of it (rates vary) and will cash it there and then. /You will need to take some ID

Why dont you have a bank account? If it's down to poor credit history, why dont you open a basic account with someone like the Co-Op or the PostOffice. An online savings account might another alternative and then you can ask for the money to be sent their as a cash transfer rather than a cheque.

Either way, you need to speak to Santander and find out what the policy is in this case since clearly, the cheque is useless to you right now. I would be quite insistent too.

Take this opportunity to open an account, either with a bank or building society.
  • You can always open a savings account, which wouldn't need any credit checks at all. That would be a much cheaper way than using one of those high street Cheque Cashing Services.

To clear the cheque? without paying high fees to cash convertor or the like then yes. (although building societies would suffice)
