Probably best and cheapest place is here
http://www.freelancer.co.uk/
You tell them what you want and what you have to spend and they will bid for the contract. Review their previous work and other references and job done. Get it done for half the price of any other companies out there0 -
+1 for Freelancer.co.uk
I am registered as both a freelancer and an employer.
I posted a job for someone to produce a set of 32 icons for a website and got the work done to a very high quality for $100. Would have cost a lot more if I had gone to a local designer.0 -
Web Developler here But i am not using MSE for touting.
Have a large portfolio of clients but the best advice i could reccomend is start offline with some paper and pens, Get the idea of what you want your website to look at it makes people in my field more easy to work with in terms of design? plan and write your goals before you come online and keep in terms of what your business message you are trying to say, Are you selling adverts? Whos your competition? is it in a niche? what age of people are you trying to attract and demographics?
If you can spend a little time on that what i mentioned you then will have a greater idea and lessen the costs for building
Hope that helps

Also set your budget from the outset - £50, £300 or a £600 or more?
Will the site need updates, are you going to do that, or are you going to pay someone else to do it?
What about a branding and a logo. If you're going to print business cards, budget for this to begin with.
Domain Name (URL) - check that the one that matches your business is available.
£50 is DIY website territory, £300 should buy you a very basic site, £600 or more should get you a basic website set up that you can edit yourself.
If your budget is modest - go for a word-of-mouth recommendation.0 -

Thank you for your suggestions:beer:. I think I will probably try freelancer. I am quite confident on the site layout as the idea has been brewing for ages and the only thing that has stopped me is not knowing where to go to get the website built. I enquired with a company that a friend used and based on a similar site, I guess it is more of a directory, they were quoting around 2k.
I have a couple of diy sites that have been great up till now for another business however I feel that we have outgrown them now however I haven't changed them for the same reason as I don't know where to go...0
