This is a serious post before you read on. Teach your cats to use the toilet. I taught my cat when he was 8 and it'll save on the cat litter. Don't believe me? Plenty of vids online.MFW 2013 #146 Target £6000

my cats will drink the toilet water if they can - not sure that'll work in my house but an interesting idea!0

I'd personally never recommend canceling pet insurance, unless you have means of paying a huge vets bill should one arise.
I learnt this lesson the hard way with my last dog, who I didn't have insured - I got myself in over £4000 of credit card debt, when he developed cancer, and whilst I don't regret spending a penny of it it took me a couple of years to pay off.
My cat has been insured for 8 years now and I've never had to claim, but the piece of mind is priceless.0 -
My three will only eat Royal Canin Exigent for fussy cats, but there are benefits for teeth and coats. I buy online from Amazon and it works out around £30 for about 8 weeks of food. although we have now found out that we are feeding a visitor who comes in whilst ours are sleeping!0

I would definitely recommend cutting back on the food and litter costs rather than the insurance, as several have already said, as a problem is always going to arise when you can afford it least (sods law!) and so insurance will be a godsend, even if your cats don't go outside, as accidents can still happen!0

I've changed my insurance to another provider saving £10 a month
now testing out other cat litters and cheaper foods. 0 -
I feed all 5 of my cats on hills i buy it from amazon for £54(ish) for a 15kg bag we use a bag in 2 months so that works out at 18p per cat per day to feed.
I'm fortunate in that I don't need to insure my cats. what I would advise though is speak to your vet before you change companies as they will be able to give you an idea if there is anything that is likely to be excluded. for example if you're cat has a heart murmur but doesn't yet need treatment for it and you changed companies all conditions to do with his heart would be excluded.0 -
I have been buying Harringtons cat food lately, higher meat content than the likes of Whiskas and cheap. I get a 1.5kg bag for £5 or the small box is often on offer in Asda for £1.
I buy wood cat litter either in huge bags online for about £10 or in small bags from B and M for £1. I have seen various different brands of catfood and occasionally litter in Poundland which is worth checking every time you pass.0 -
Agree with a previous poster re Lidl's cat litter 'Coshida'. It's £1.69p for 10kg bag and it is Fuller's Earth and is clumping.0

Bulk buy everything! Check your local petshop to see what the largest packs available of litter/wet food/dry food are, if those aren't available in your preferred brand, ask if the will order the larger pack from the supplier. Two local petshops have been very good with me on this, however I wouldn't expect to get the same reaction from Asda/tesco etc.
Work out the price per kilo / 100grams when comparing litter and food, helps when comparing differing pack sizes.
The larger packs are a shock when you buy that first pack, but it does work out cheaper long term.:j got married 3rd May 2013 :beer:0
