Bathroom Quote

Our shower installed "professionally" 3 years ago is falling to bits. I had a quote from a recommended plumber/workman as follows

"To remove section of damaged plasterboard (this is about 1m by 1.5m) and loose tiles to one wall in the shower enclosure and fit new plasterboard and tiles, re-seal whole enclosure, securely fix shower riser rail"

for a cost of £450

I liked the guy who came around, but that seems high for what would seem to be 1-2 days work

It's probably falling to bits because ordinary, untreated plasterboard has been used - once any water gets in it quickly destroys it and your tiles start falling off.

I would recommend you get it done with Aquapanel or similar - a cement backing board that moisture won't disintegrate. If you are using plasterboard, at minimum it should be tanked before tiling in a wet area.

Would also question the wisdom of only redoing the damaged bit - if it has all been done the same then the likelihood is that sooner or later it will all come to bits. Probably better longer term to strip out the entire enclosure area and do it properly.
