I am on placement for my course, basically 30 hours each week for 10 weeks.
We get travel costs, 10p per mile, up to 48 times.
now 48 times divided by the number of weeks is travelling 4.8 times a week there and back. Now I travel there and back more like 60-70 times over the course, but the max we can claim from uni is 48 times.
I have also taken young people to Liverpool for a concert (with other leaders, but it was required that I drive a car full of people, hence more mileage), taken them to the cinema (Again, more miles) and in a few weeks I am driving to Shropshire for placement for a weekend away. (From Chester that is)
Placment is about 14 miles away, and I get paid for anything over my travel to uni - to I travel 1 mile to uni, so its 13 miles I get paid for going there, and 13 back. In the end its about £126 I get back.
But in reality I am putting £20 of petrol in my car every 5-6 days. I travel 1 mile to uni once a week (Yep, not very MSE, but for reasons I do, and my housemate comes with me) and maybe 10 miles per week is personal, whereas its another roughly 200 miles with placement.
What can I do? Its cost me a small fortune! I have a 700cc engine, so its not even a large engine. Can I get any more money?

Have you asked your uni if it is possibly to claim more than the 48 journeys? This has to be your starting point.
I am concerned that you using your own car to transport others whilst on placement. Are you insured for this?Gone ... or have I?0 -

if you are all getting paid for your travel expenses then you should ask the people you are taking to give you the money they get as travel expenses towards your running costs. The loans company will give you help but you hae to prove that you spend over £240 on travelloinig a year or something like that.0
