Hair Salon Mishap - what now?

Hoping someone can help...
I dyed my hair red a few times at home last year, and then had it dyed brown with blonde highlights at a salon. I went to a different salon today, after my hair had grown around 2 inches and asked for my hair to be dyed as close as possible to my natural colour (mousy brown) as I do not want to have to keep dying it. They said they could do this, however my highlights would probably start showing through after a few washes.
It went wrong, the roots went bright orange and the bottom didn't take at all. They put another dye straight on and that still hasn't worked. It's ginger on top and dark at the middle & bottom - but patchy too.
I haven't paid and they say they will correct it (appointment booked for Friday). They were very apologetic, and said they could not understand how/why it had happened.
My question is - do they just have to make it look decent, or as I asked, as close as possible to my natural colour?
I've had a look online for answers, but all I can find are situations where the scalp has been burned, or the salon is not willing to correct.

What brand of home colour did you use??Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
How dark brown are you, and when did you last have red on your hair? I'm not a hairdresser but it sounds like your hair would need to be stripped to get to your natural colour, and your hair is probably not in a fit state to do this.
I would say that if they can get your hair to a mousey brown, I would pay them. If they simply repair the damage they have done, I would not expect to pay.0 -
It was something live....schwarzkopf??
Am I allowed to not pay if they make my hair nearly black, but an even colour?
And....I'm not sure how to 'thank' sorry.0 -

I think you've discovered your problem, the Live dyes are a nightmare to cover. What colour was your hair when you went into the salon?0 -
The top couple of inches was mousy brown (now ginger) and the rest was a reddish brown with highlights (now patchy) some bits are uncoloured and some are dark brown.
The previous salon covered the live fine though?0 -

They covered it because they were using something with a red tone and still relatively dark.
I do think that your two options are stripping (unlikely unless your hair is in very good condition), or balancing out the colour you have now. As to how much you should pay - it really depends on the result they can achieve. It sounds like they are being reasonable, so I would hope that continues.0 -
Thank you, I'd like it stripped, as the whole point of me going was to get as near as poss to my natural colour, but after two dyes today, I don't think my hair will take it.0

And yes, they have been very reasonable so far thankfully!0

Might be worth using a good protein conditioning treatment a few times between now and Friday? Just not on Thursday, colour takes better on unwashed hair.0

Hi,
I would go back to the hairdressers on Friday and see if they can strip your hair first .. I know it seems like your hair has been through a lot but I can't see how they are going to fix this easily!!
I dyed my hair red about a year and a half ago and the a few weeks after my then boyfriend proposed to me! I didn't want to have red hair on our wedding day so I tried to dye it myself to a brown colour which my hair then ended up being about 3 shades darker than normal and a reddy brown (not ideal!)
I used a off the shelf hair stripper which admittedly turned my hair a ginger blonde colour (I too am mousy brown naturally). I then re-dyed my hair using a lighter brown ... worked a treat!! (so basically dyed/ stripped my hair 4 times in the space of a month!)
Since then I've been to the hairdressers and they've dyed my hair permanently back to it's natural colour while I grow out the bit that's been through all of those colour changes - needless to say my hair didn't do what has happened to yours.
Worth a shot though2014
