Using a PO box? Or a Virtual Office? Can I?

Ok so just a quick question if I may?

I have been looking at using a virtual office for my business, because quite honestly my address is not in the best part of my city.

So I was thinking if I take the new address and use it as my address (as many people do). Can I send all of my legal documents to this address? What happens when my insurance costs are reduced purely due to the new address is that legal????

Thanks in advance...

I assume you are talking motor insurance.

You will in effect be lieing about where the car is kept in order to get a reduced premium.

If/when the insurance company find out it is likely that they will cancel the policy. You will then have to declare that on any future insurance applications, which will result in many companies declining you and the ones that do consider you charging a fortune.
  • I accept what you are saying, but if that is the business address, what else would you do? Obviously you want all of your business details to match, and not have half at different addresses. I am wondering how other people get on with this? As there are so many people using these services now?

Having said all of that when you talk motor insurance, I think you can specify kept at another address?

I don't fancy the idea of cancelled policies, but again if it's legal it's very attractive.

you cant use a PO box as your registered address with companies house if you are a Ltd Company.

Personally i would use your current address for 'official' things like insurance HMRC etc but use a PO box of virtual office for customers

You seem to be changing your story here. In your first post you said
if I take the new address and use it as my address

Which to me looks like you are talking about using the virtual office for your personal correspondence, but now you are talking about business correspondence - so which is it.

Again totally different to your original post where you say
What happens when my insurance costs are reduced purely due to the new address

Which to me hints that you are considering trying to reduce your premium by stating that your car is kept in a better postcode than it really is.
  • Sorry! I started looking at the address for my business, but when I quoted for some insurance I noticed the difference, with my car insurance being business insurance, I wondered what would happen... I emailed the Company offering the address to see what they said.

It's not a PO box address but a residential UK address... Should say your Company name appears after the street name too

As I said before, if you apply for the assurance and gain a lower premium by indicating that the car is kept at a different address then it would be fraud and if discovered the insurance would be cancelled.

If, it is possible to apply for the insurance and have the correspondence address as your virtual office, but the "kept at address" as your home then there is nothing wrong with that.
  • Thanks, with the above in mind and exactly as you said. It's still cheaper!!!!

I didn't quote for a car policy at first, I was in fact looking at public liability, but I feel quite pleased with myself now :-)

    Thanks again all.

I've no idea what this thread has to do with small business or charity if it's about your car insurance.

However, you can use any address you want for mailing purposes - but the insurer will want to know where you keep the car, and that is what will be used to calculate your premium.
You'll probably also cause further complications because the address of the registered keeper is not that of the proposer (unless you change that too). It won't be impossible to sort out, but may involve being referred to explain the situation.

I certainly can't see it saving you any money, but could cost your more ;)

Um not to such about the legal side of it in regards to Motor insurance but i do know that you can use Virtual Addresses with HMRC if they are registered with them. I use the Eazi Virtual Solutions Peterborough and sometimes Nottingham branch for my mail. They charge around £3.50 a month for a Virtual Address / Virtual Office
  • That's interesting, thank you!
