"Don't forget, that if someone has dementia, they are disregarded when it comes to Council Tax."
We didn't know this, thank you for the information, I'll look into it.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
REM alzheimer's & stroke's [severely mentally impaired] are also forms of dementia. In addition to qualify for the disregard .. .. the person must be entitled to [though not necessarily in receipt of] one of many means tested benefits. For those not sure - there's a list of specific qualifying benefits here.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. A friend of mine has been diagnosed with a mild cognitive impairment and is not sure if it will progress to dementia, but expects it will as it runs in family members. Will that person be disregarded when it comes to paying council tax, he also get AA0 -
Probably best to ask the local council how they assess this. I don't think it covers a mild cognitive impairment, but I don't know how bad it has to be!A friend of mine has been diagnosed with a mild cognitive impairment and is not sure if it will progress to dementia, but expects it will as it runs in family members. To be 'Severely mentally impaired' means this permanent illness needs two things to be satisfied. (1) ' a certificate signed by a doctor confirming the impairment' and (2) they should also be entitled to [but not necessarily in receipt of] one of the benefits listed below [or would have qualified for one of them if they had not already reached State Pension age].
Incapacity Benefit
Severe Disablement Allowance
Unemployability Supplement
Unemployability Allowance
Attendance Allowance
An increase in the rate of Disablement Pension
Constant Attendance Allowance
The High or Mid rate care component of Disability Living Allowance
Income Support [which includes a disability premium]
If in doubt just find out as Savvy_Sue has said, get in touch with the LA and ask or fill out a form like this. The printable form has two parts, one part for the applicant to fill out and and sign, and another part for the GP to complete per his / her regulations and sign.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Thanks for that information he got a test done by a doctor that his GP referred him to and after an initial assessment by that Dr she confirmed that he had mild cognitive impairment. He also gets higher rate of AA as well.
I am not sure he would want to be classed as having dementia though despite that he may get his council tax reduced.0 -
Thanks everyone for replies, he lives on his own and get single person allowance for council but was not aware that he could get extra council tax discount for been in receipt of AA0
