Replacing a door lock on car...

Quick post for advice (apols for typos I'm rocking a newborn baby in one arm!).

My partner has a 2001 Skoda Fabia Classic. His drivers side door has a separate key from the ignition/passenger side door. The lock has failed completely today, the key is just spinning around in the barrel. It had been stiff for a few months, and my partner just ignored it . Am assuming the previous owners had the same issue, hence why it already has its own key.

Anyway, it clearly needs another new lock/key. Does anyone have any idea how much we are looking at. And where we take it to for this kind of job. Would a regular mechanic do the job? :)

Thanks in advance!

Probably around £10-£20 from a scrapyard and no more than an hour labour. Any mechanic or bodyshop can do it.

does your car not have remote central locking?

i have a 2001 audi a3 (from the same VAG family as the skoda) and the lock barrel is built into and not removable from the door handle mechanism which has 2 cables that plug into the central locking module. To buy new would be £££

I only guessing that yours will be the same. If it is, you will probably want the get a handle mechanism that matches the colour of your car. Ebay will probably be your best bet.

They are easy to fit if you are handy with a screwdriver although a bit fiddly.

    EDIT.

Just looked on ebay and there's one on there that i saw and it was £40. They're not as complex as my a3 handle mech and the barrel is removable.

Hi, no it does not have central locking. Just key operated locks. :)

    Thanks anyway though!

Scrap yards will have the lock in a door, but rarely ever have a key to fit it. In your situation I'd go to the genuine dealership and get them to order up a door lock matched to the ones in the car already.

Sure, it costs more, but the lock will have a warranty, and you have one less key to cart around to get into it and make it move!

I did this for my car when the drivers door lock got tampered with. Went to the dealership (Honda) to get a lock to fit the existing key and it cost £160 fitted. As the part will only fit your car they will want you to pay for it before they will order it.
