Mixed news on our situation - we emailed a picture of the item still in the Royal Mail bag and promptly received a refund.

However paypal have put a temporary hold on the refunded amount?

We are awaiting an explanation from their helpdesk, but we can see no reason why it would be held. The refund came through as part of the original transaction, not as a separate payment.

how was the original payment made? if by bank transfer and paypal are yet to take the payment from you then they will wait until they receive it before they give you the refund

To OP, it is upto the seller to make sure your item gets to you in perfect condition. If it doesnt then it is upto her make a claim against royal mail, not you.

She should refund you in full, if you were send items back or at least a partial refund for the damaged items. If the person is unwilling then you should a dispute against her.

Forget about whether or you recieve bad feedback, it is what is said within tha feedback is all that counts. That is the whole idea of the system, to make buyers aware of the type of seller.

Too many bad sellers out there beacause buyers are too scared to leave factual feedback. If more sellers got the feedback they deserved then there would not be as many bad sellers out there, sorry for goinf off track.

Stand your ground and try sort it out with seller, otherwise start a dispute, if the person you bought them for doesnt mind.

    Hi
There is a problem as a seller. If you put lots of packaging in your costs go up and people don't buy. HAving said that to send obviously fragile things unboxed is inexcusable. I receive things - like creams in their box and in jiffy and the boxes are almost always crushed.

I sell and some people do expect miracles with regards to packaging. If the item is not breakable or easily crushed a jiffy should be fine. I have had people complain about a book in a jiffy. that should be fine given reasonable handling and if you were to box a single book my costs would be prohibitive.

So upshot is the sellers should give you a refund, if they don't do a chargeback. They should also use common sense when packaging as should buyers when complaining - because as a seller you can only package to protect it from reasonable handling - not always the case at PO!

They throw things around at the PO, even at the local one I use, they turn around and aim for the basket!! Glad I sell old mags!
But anything breakable should be adequately packaged, whatever the cost, as refunds/returns are more hassle than packaging properly in the first place.

I agree with poster #14 (and most of the others!), don't accept the sellers terms and leave appropriate feedback, without worrying about the retaliation. One neg isn't the end of the world, do reply to any they leave you, precise and to the point.

Glad you got the refund, sorry it's being held. Paypal have rules all of their own!!
Thank you to everyone who posts comps! :A

now had a second message from seller, now says she found her father dead last week and is in the process of arranging his funeral, I feel really bad that we are quibbling about poor packaging when she is going through this, however my sceptical husband thinks otherwise.....

Bubble wrap weighs next to nothing. I sent a dozen small pottery owls a couple of weeks ago and each one was wrapped individually in a double layer of bubble wrap and all boxed together. Arrived as they left - unbroken. And I always reckon if you write FRAGILE on an item some sadistic PO worker will actually jump on it/drop it on purpose!

As I've said many times before, I'm surprised there's any people left in the world with the amount of deaths in ebay families.

I recently bought 2 identical boxed pottery moneyboxes as Easter gifts (you can tell I'm a MSE fan can't you?:rotfl: ) for my twin nieces. They arrived with an outer wrapping made from a black bin bag. The 2 cardboard boxes inside had no protective bubblewrap etc and as they were flimsy were badly crushed and battered. Not only that but the 2 boxes were fastened together with brown parcel tape and in order to separate them(very carefully and taking ages) the attractive boxes lost most of their illustrative pictures.

Oh well, I thought. I'll just wrap the moneyboxes in tissue and Easter paper and the girls won't ever know they were supposed to be boxed! But on opening the cardboard boxes I found each moneybox was partly wrapped in a small piece of bubble-wrap, leaving a massive amount of space in the boxes. One of the moneyboxes had a big piece broken off and the other was cracked:eek:.

I emailed the seller(very nicely) because my feedback of 100% has been hard-earned over a few years and I didn't want retaliation:eek: . She replied straight away to say she'd miscalculated on the postage she charged me and it didn't cover the actual cost so she'd asked her DH(who incidentally works for the Royal Mail and 'knows how they chuck things around' she said) to parcel them up more economically for her:rolleyes: . She said she was livid with him as he of all people should have known better!

I wish I had £1 for every seller who responds to an email about goods damaged in the post with the excuse that someone else did the packing for them:rotfl:.

I have an Ebay shop and if you had contacted me I would ask for either a photo of the damage or return of the item, whichever was easiest for you I'd also give you the choice of a refund or replacement (these sound more like a one-off so replacement prob not applicable).

If I was you, I'd go straight to Pay Pal and open a dispute against the seller. She has obligations to you, her customer. The story about her relative may be true, but she should not be using it to try to make you feel bad about taking issue with your item not being packed properly and arriving damaged.

Below is the link to Pay Pal's tutorial on opening a dispute
