Benifits as self employed?

If I leave my company to work as self employed can i claim any benifits till my income starts as self employed?

I am looking at leaving without notice from my current job as I belive they wont have the money to pay me at the end of the month!

  • If they cannot pay you - why don't you wait till they either sack/or make you redundant. You would be entitled to unemployment benefit then.
  • I feel i am waisting my time there, I want to get my own design company up and running asap, and while im there i cant be doing that, i have 4 kids at home, so getting any wok done at night is out the question :( but if i just walk out then i cant claim jsa or income support while i am getting up and running on my own

As I understand it, it's likely that you will be treated as having resigned without good cause, and will not be entitled to JSA.

You may in principle be entitled to tax credits, if you have started a legitimate buisness.
  • Benefits are really meant to be a 'safety net'. If you have a job and leave without another job to go to then you have to have enough savings to be able to live until you find another job.

It sounds like your company may soon go under if they can't afford to pay you so you might end up being made redundant soon anyway?
  • Yes it soundslike they aregoing to close soon, but I really dont want to be there anymore during that time. With a husband and wife as directors (arguing for all to hear) about the lack of money and how they cant go on like this :( Always asking me to get money from people knowing that they dont have the stock to sell then having to keep lyeing to customers that there order has been delayed... its very stressfull for a job just over minium wage
  • Next time a customer asks about their order - can't you put them through to the husband or wife?

If you can put up with it till they close down you would be entitled to JSA but remember that you'd have to be actively looking for a job - not self employed.

You might be better just looking for another full time job and get some savings behind you before you start your venture.

Even being self-employed is difficult and you might not make that much when you first start. I don't know if you might be entitled to some new business grants.

Get yourself set up. Get a UTR. Tax Credits are a possibility. In fact, you could ask for a claim form now if you expect the situation to change soon. Do your research though. TC's are based on PY income (2011-12), and CY income cannot be too high for the HOUSEHOLD.
