  • guys.

Im not bad with data backup etc so im well aware of the possible failures.
really im after a simple 2 bay nas system where I can raid 2 x 1tb drives. these will then be periodically backed up on to seperate drives / SSD's. so if I lose anything it wont be more than a month or so. just want something like a synology 212 or like that is compact and doea what I want without the wife killing me when I tell her I spent £400 or data storage !
    Mortgage free wannabe!
    Total mortgage = £106k
    Monthly payments = £523
    Extra monthly Payments = £500

Really think the D-Link DN320 is your man. Just be sure its up to date with firmware, although there has only ever been one update I know of ever and it can be done after its up and running via its own interface without losing anything. As to noise, its got a small fan that is temperature and speed controlled so it only does the minimum needed. With my low energy drives it very rarely even kicks in and then runs really slow. (you have to set the fan to auto in the admin page)

Mine has been up about a year and its on a UPS power supply for extra protection a really good idea. Its never had any data issues, glitches, hang ups, scandisks fails, nothing.. apart from liking to attract dust to its nice gloss black case!

  • mitchb.. having a 1 bay nas is really not a great idea. atleast with a 2 bay, if one drive fails you have a mirror of it.

I'd still go with the Synology personally. Possibly an older cheaper model like the DS212j which you can pick up for about £150. I have the model before the that, the DS211J, still going strong, still getting software updates.

It really is the software on the Synology that makes it so good, well that and I can copy files to it at 65MB/sec (yes, megabytes, not megabits). Much much better than the WD MyBook World it replaced.
