Working Out Annual G&E Usage
Help needed by someone more savvy than me please!
I moved in Oct last year and returned to Eon for Gas & Elec on 8th November. My online account is a mess with readjustments and what not making it really difficult for me to work out my estimated annual usage (for use in comparisons for other providers and for energy saving purposes).
The only info I have is the following:
18th Nov - 4th Jan = 3712 kwhours (gas used)
8th nov - 4th Jan = 2006 kw hours (elect used)
Is it possible to use this to work out roughly what I would use in a year kw-wise taking into account less expected usage in Summer?
Thanks!

Your lifestyle, appliances, heating, hot water etc all affect your consumption and there is no way to estimate with so little information.
However to use 2,006kWh electricity in under two months - when you have gas(presumably for heating/hot water??) is very high consumption.
Unless you use electricity for heating/hot water the consumption in winter is normally not dramatically higher for most people.0 -
Thanks - I think it is very high too! This house is much bigger than our previous one and the number of lights is phenomenal. We have ceiling lights (can't think what you call them now!) in the kitchen, bathroom, downstairs and upstairs landing (lots of them), light fixtures in the downstairs lounge & dining room have five candle bulbs in them. I can only imagine that is what is making the electricity reading higher?MSE-ing since 20070

YES - From your desciption, those ceiling lights are probably "GU10" fittings with 50 watt bulbs - just 2 of them will consume 1Kwh in 10 hours - Lots of them a great deal more
These bulbs can be replaced with a low energy bulb 9watt at a cost of around £4 each. or if you are in this house for the the long term it's worth considering
3 watt LED bulbs - But these cost around a £10 each but do have a life of 20,000 hours.0 -
Thank you! My brother in law suggest LED but the cost frightens me somewhat. i think we'll change over to energy savers room by room and then move over to LED one by one after that. I can't get over the number of lights in this house! Even switching them off when leaving rooms is clocking up the electricity.
Right- change lights then re-evaluate. Replies have been much appreciated.MSE-ing since 20070 -

You could use the seasonal adjustment graph in this link to help estimate your annual usage

I guess you are on target to consume 10,000 kWh of electric and 20,000 kWh of gas over 12 months
That's alot of energy. Remember, even if you opt for low energy lightbulbs, you will not get the heat you currently get from them (that goes to supplementing the heating the house at this time of year), so your heating consumption will increase.0 -
Hi Nicki_Sue
As others have said, you do seem to be racking up quite a lot of usage at the moment. We may be able to help reduce this.
Have a chat with our Energy Efficiency team. They specialise in helping people cut back on their energy usage. Tell them about your property and the appliances you have.
Ask for a copy of a booklet called '100 ways to save money by saving energy.' It's free and contains lots of useful ideas to help you save.
Check out the website, too. The 'Interactive House' and 'Energy Menu' are particularly useful.
Hope this is of interest. Give me a shout if I can help further as happy to do so.

Thanks Malc.
I rang yesterday (before I saw this) and asked to increase my direct debit. I'll ring back and see if there are any solutions the efficiency team can suggest.
We have exactly the same appliances etc as we did in the previous property, the only noticeable difference (by far) are the number of lights. Hopefully they can help.

I joined EON in March last year, via a doorstep salesman, he said £86 -50 DD would cover my dual fuel, i said it wouldnt as i was classed by EDF as a high user, he insisted it would, then got a bill from EON for arrears of £400, before i had been with them only a couple of weeks , rang them and was told my old , and new account no;s got mixed up, then got a call in october saying they were changing my DD to £275 a month
Then i was told thatwas a mistake,as i was with Staywarm a couple of years before, and using old account no again
I thought i had got it all sorted out when a representative of EON contacted me on here, i spoke to her on then ohone, and she got my DD down to £115 a month, she was going to ring me again but didnt, and her post to me on the forum has disappeared
I was told that i had used £600 of gas and Electric last summer, which just sounds ridiculous to me, also £400 between October and December,
After really going over my welcome letter to EON and miy last bill, i can see that there is a very bid discrepancy in my welcome letters reading of my meters, and what i am supposed to have used between last summer and now
The welcome letter with previous readings cant be right,as it says my yearly usage of Electricity was only rated at £419.31, and gas £667.69. yet i am supposed to have used more than that in 2 months
I am seriously wondering if the salesman has given a wrong reading of my meter, something isnt right,if it was av wrong reading, could it all have been added on
I am fed up with EON, they really dont seem to know what they are doing, and everyone you speak to tells you different things
I wasnt in debt by the way when i left Staywarm, in fact i had a rebate0 -
Hi valeriej43
Your post hasn't disappeared. You originally contacted us through the moneysupermarket.com gas & electric forum not MSE. This post and my colleague, Amanda's, reply is still there.
I've just spoken to Amanda and she has your account in her diary ready to complete the agreed actions. She'll contact you later today to follow up.
Amanda also has your emails.
Sorry for any confusion.

While i was waiting for Amanda to ring in the meantime i gotr a letter asking for £189 arrears, to be paid immediately, a few days later a threat of further action if not paid immediately, so obviously no notes on their computer saying i had agreed a DD amount with Amanda,
I was waiting for the cancelled one to go through from the bank0
