Inbuilt SD card reader problems

Options
Compaq CQ61 laptop, Windows 7 64-bit.

The lappy has an inbuilt card reader which was working fine a couple of month ago.

Inserting a known good SD card into the reader and nothing happened.
No beep, no autostart menu. SD card not shown in my computer and does not show in device manager or in manage drives.

Tried the following without any success:
  • Tried several SD cards (which work on the other PC)
  • Switch off, unplug cable, press power button for 5 seconds then reboot
  • As above without battery
  • Reinstalled driver software for realtek reader
  • System restore
  • Dance naked round tree in garden:)
Cannot uninstall/reinstall as I can't find it!

Anyone got any suggestions?

Dave

  • Was it a Mulberry Bush  It should be in the USB section of Device Manager, but the problem may be fluff/gunk in the slot. Also Check in Event Viewer for info/errors

Checked it hasn't been disabled in the bios?
  • A quick test for problems if you have a Linux Live CD/USB to try that too

    Thanks for your suggestions:
    • I've checked for fluff/gunk and bent pins on the slot and I can't see anything out of the ordinary
    • Looked in the BIOS and there are only a limited number of options - guess it's because it's a laptop. Disabling/enabling card reader is not one of them. There is an option to reset all to default which I may try if the laptop gets worse.
    • Looked in device manager and no Card reader under USB. I did try updating drivers on the USB hubs but windows thinks they are all up-to-date
    • There is an awful lot of info in the event viewer I had a look in the hardware section and nothing like a card reader problem to see
I'm reluctant to do anything serious like a factory restore just for the sake of reading an SD card on the laptop. I have a couple of easy workarounds, I can use my Creative Zen in SD card mode or swap the USB card reader from my desktop.

Are pound shop card reader USB adaptors any good?

    Update:

With the card in the slot I poked around in the HP troubleshooter Suddenly without me doing anything, the laptop downloaded and installed the Realtec card reader 2.0 software.

Everything back to normal, just don't ask me how I did it.:)
