    Faulty switch inside handbrake mechanism.

Wiggle around the handbrake fiercly but not so much to cause damage, this may get switch working again.

There's a possibility the switch has actually broken and requires replacing or maybe the connector has worked loose and fallen off.

If connector has fallen off, it just requires reconnecting.

Is the handbrake and footbrake warning light the same on the 106?

If so, this would indicate low brake fluid or a similar serious fault. Take the car to a garage if you are unsure no to check, needless to say brakes are important!

It's most probably indicating a low brake fluid level.

Get the brakes checked to make sure the pads and/or shoes aren't worn. On many cars the handbrake warning light also functions as a low brake pad/brake shoe warning light.

yes, last time I had this on a car was when my brake pipes had been replaced and the brake fluid wasn't filled up to the correct level.

I agree with all the above comments, but also, when I had this, and much head scratching etc...it turned out to indicate a blown rear brake light. (Gen4 Toyota Celica).

Important to get sorted asap, good luck!
